Abnormal PCOS Hair Growth: The Cause

Hormones are responsible for almost everything that happens to our body. Our temperature, sense of hunger, and the different changes that happen to us are governed by the different hormones found in our body.

One such hormone is the sex hormones. For males, the one responsible for muscle growth and facial and body hair is the male androgen called testosterone. For females, estrogen is responsible for the development of secondary female characteristics such as breast development and ovulation.

Both of these hormones can be found in both male and female bodies. The determining characteristics of the person can be produced, however, by the proper ratio and combination of these two hormones in ones body. For males, they have an abundance of testosterone while females have an excess of estrogen. The proper balance between these two hormones regulates the proper secondary characteristics that appear on a person.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition of categorized symptoms that generally affect 5% of all the women worldwide. The condition is characterized by lack of menstruation and ovulation, obesity, depression, hair loss, and abnormal hair growth. The latter being one of the most embarrassing symptoms that the patient experiences.

The cause of this abnormal hair growth is because of the increased testosterone levels in the female that has PCOS. A client with PCOS generally has increased testosterone levels which entail gives the client secondary male characteristics.

A female that has excessive hair growth is termed medically as having hirsutism—the condition in which the female has excessive hair growth throughout her body.

But since PCOS is treatable with hormone replacement therapy, in the long run once the hormones stabilize and return to normal, the secondary male characteristics will gradually disappear. The problem itself is not permanent so women with PCOS experiencing this dilemma should not fret.
